The Timberland Company Comes to Ellis for Earth Day!
On April 22, 2008, more than 50 Timberland employees came to Ellis to work on a number of environmentally-responsible projects to benefit our school and our children. The projects included:
- Building a Greenhouse
- Creating an Outdoor Classroom
- Creating Walking Trails
- Building a Compost Unit
- Creating a Butterfly Garden
- Creating Herb Gardens
In preparation for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, all Ellis School students have been learning about environmentally-responsible behaviors as part of their daily curriculum. Many classrooms have also been giving back to their community through grade-level service projects:
- Kindergarten students have been picking up litter around school grounds.
- First graders took part in a grade-level recycled book swap.
- Second graders have been collecting bottles and cans. They will recycle these items and turn in the refundable items. Money collected will be donated to the Fremont Food Pantry.
- Third & Fourth Graders have been collecting items and money for the New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham, NH. Click here for a list of items requested: SPCA Donations
Thank you to the Timberland Company for all you've done to make our school and our community a more beautiful place.

Here are some ways that we are already conserving our natural resources within the school building:
-
Changed all t-12 ballasts and flourescent bulbs to energy-efficient t-8 ballasts and bulbs in a rebate program through PSNH
-
Water faucets are motion-sensored in all bathrooms
-
Light switches are now occupancy-sensored in most rooms in the building
-
As needed, we replace pump motors to highest-efficiency motors in a rebate program through PSNH
-
Recycle paper & cardboard
-
Recycle plastic bottles
Fun Facts & Information
Did you know....
-
For every ton of paper that is recycled, the following is saved: 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, and enough electricity to power an average house for 6 months
-
You can run a television for six hours on the amount of electricity that is saved from recycling one aluminum can
-
By recycling just one glass bottle, you save enough electricity to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours
The more we throw away, the more space we take up in landfills. When a landfill becomes a “landfull”, taxpayers have to build a new one. The less we throw away, the longer our landfills will last. The amount of taxpayer money we save by extending the longevity of our landfills is an important community benefit.
