Students using District transportation are under jurisdiction of the District from the time the 

bus arrives at the bus stop at pick up in the morning until the bus exits the bus stop at drop 

off in the afternoon.  It is the practice of the District in accord with state law to instruct all 

pupils who are transported by the District in the following: 

1.  School bus safety; 

2.  The evacuation procedure for buses in emergency situations; and 

3.  Such other matters as are germane to the safety of pupils being transported to school. 

Students transported in a school bus shall be subject to the authority of the District and 

under the control of the bus driver. The Superintendent and the Principal are authorized by 

this policy to suspend the right of pupils from riding in a school bus when said pupils fail to 

conform to the reasonable rules and regulations set forth in the parent­student handbook 

and approved by this Board. 

Any suspension of bus privileges to continue beyond twenty (20) school days shall be 

approved by the School Board.  Except in the case of extreme misconduct, a suspension 

from the school bus shall not begin until the next school day following the day notification 

of suspension is sent to the student’s parent or legal guardian.  If a pupil has been denied 

the right to ride a school bus for disciplinary reasons, the parent or guardian of that pupil 

has a right of appeal within ten (10) days of suspension to the authority who suspends the 

pupil’s right.  Until the appeal is heard or if the suspension of the pupil’s right to ride the 

school bus is upheld, it shall be the parent’s or guardians’ responsibility to provide 

transportation to and from the school for that pupil for the period of the suspension.  The 

Superintendent or his/her designee shall develop rules and regulations for conduct on buses 

and these shall be reviewed and approved by the School Board prior to being printed in the 

parent­student handbook.  Upon request, the rules and regulations for conduct on the buses 

shall be made available to students and parents in another language or presented orally. 

A parent who wishes to request a change or exemption from any of the student 

transportation policies of the District shall direct their request first in the first instance to the 

District’s transportation coordinator. If the parent/guardian is not satisfied by the 

determination of the SAU transportation coordinator, he/she may appeal the determination 

within five (5) days to the Superintendent. If the parent is dissatisfied by the ruling of the 

Superintendent, he/she may appeal within five (5) days to the School Board.
