Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the 6th grade! I am excited to be the new 6th grade mathematics teacher and look forward to the “Exploration, Discovery, and Metamorphosis” we will all experience this year! While I am new to the 6th grade team, I am not new to Fremont. This will be my 10th year at the Ellis School and I have always enjoyed and appreciated the students, families, and support of this town’s residents.
Those of you who have older children that had me in the 7th or 8th grades know that I thrive on organization, routine, and procedure. I hope to help each student find a system that will help them thrive academically for years to come. I use routines and procedures not to restrict the students, but to free them by creating a structured learning environment that is familiar, calm, and running smoothly. This frees students to worry about the mathematics, not what is going to happen next, or what my expectations are going to be today.
My general expectations of students are that they are Respectful (ex. listen to others, use manners), Responsible (ex. use materials correctly, complete class work and homework on time and to the best of their ability), and Prepared (ex. bring all necessary materials to class, are ready to learn). All expectations outlined in the student handbook apply in my classroom. In addition to these, there will be procedures specific to 6th grade mathematics.
I usually send home a copy of my procedures and expectations at the beginning of the year. After nine years I had quite a list! This year I am holding off because my students and I will need to create some new ones together. A new classroom, grade level, and curriculum will mean a new way of doing things. Each procedure will be taught and practiced so that no student will be left guessing what the expectations are. As we develop our new list I will keep you posted by letter, newsletter, or my web site (http://sau83.org/staff/grade6/Mrs.Kane.htm).
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at the school by e-mail, voice-mail (895-2511 ext. 410), or note. Again, I look forward to a great year working together!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Kristine Kane
