Sargent Camp Meeting Minutes:
- This year the 6th graders will be going on their annual trip to Sargent Center in Peterborough/Hancock, NH. The trip will be the second full week in May
- The students leave at the normal school time, and are home by 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday.
- The purpose of the trip is to provide an opportunity for students to be in the environment that they are trying to learn about. For example, students can discuss what makes a healthy water system, and do tests on the stream that they are sitting next to.
- Another purpose of the trip is to build team working abilities in our kids. Students will be given many tasks that they need to solve as a group, and they learn how to be leaders and followers in an appropriate way.
- The final purpose for the trip is to give students opportunities to learn about themselves. They will be asked to try many things that they have not done before. For some students, it might just be being away from home for a week for the first time. Students will be experiencing these first in a loving, caring, and supportive environment. There is something for everyone.
Basics about the camp:
- We stay in cabins that are heated with indoor bathroom facilities.
- There are several shower stalls in each cabin with hot water.
- The students stay in rooms with other students of the same gender.
- Teachers are in the cabins as well, but in separate rooms than the students.
- The beds are quite comfortable (they are bunk beds).
- The food is served in a dining hall “family style”, and is very good with plenty of choices.
- The students do their daily activities in groups of 10 with camp counselors from Sargent Center. Teachers only tag along for fun and support if kids need it.
- There is a nurse on staff at camp and is available from sun up to sun down. In the evening and at night there is a nurse on call (via walkie talkie). There is always a certified first aid staff member available on site 24 hours a day.
- The materials list for what students need is online and always available from me at any time.
- I will be sending home several copies of the same list throughout the year to make sure everyone has one in their possession.
- There will be several permission forms that need to be signed and returned. I will be sending those home later in the school year. One of the forms is a health form. Every student needs to have had a physical within the last 3 years on file with our school nurse. All immunizations need to be up to date as well. If your child has not had a physical, please call tomorrow. Some doctors take months to get into.
- The cost of the trip is $290 per child. Fundraising has been very successful in the past few years.
