Please welcome back Mrs. Jen Farnese, BSN, who will be working part time in the nurse's office again this year. Mrs. Farnese works part time as a registered nurse for Pediatric Associates of Hampton and Portsmouth, NH. We are very lucky to have her at Ellis School!

In June 2008 we received an AED for the school from the Epping Fire Department Explorer Post 716/ Scouts. They were able to purchase AED's for the Epping Schools and area schools. AED stands for Automatic External Defibrillator used to save a person in the event of a cardiac arrest. AHA CPR Training will again be offered to all staff once a month after school. Please contact Maura if you are interested.

Health Screenings Are Done Annually By The Nurse

This consist of Hearing,Vision,Height, and Weight Checks. A report will be sent home with results and an explanation letter.

If there are concerns the nurse will also call home to make parents aware. This also includes a BMI with an explanation of what this is. The Healthy People 2010 advocates for better health in schools regarding nutrition and exercise. This is due to the rise in diabetes seen in school age children who are overweight. The Federal Government has required any school receiving funds for nutrition/ free breakfast programs to develop a Wellness Policy in their school. If you do not want your child screened by the nurse please call her or write a note requesting that your child not be screened. Check out the information regarding healthy eating and exercise created by the Sanborn School Nurses.

Head Lice In School

It is always a good idea to check your child for headlice prior to the start of school in the fall. Summer Camp is often a source of headlice. To work with the Nurse in minimizing the pesky problem parents should check their child on a regular schedule such as every Monday. If a parent discovers lice they should call the nurse and any friends the child has been with regularly for events such as sleep overs. If a student has been treated they should go to the nurse with a parent to be checked prior to returning to class. The lice have a three week cycle and it is important to check twice a day for three weeks after treatment. Please refer to websites for further information. The following web sites have evidenced based research regarding the treatment of headlice:
