Understanding how web sites work

For your bellwork, read this page to learn about hosting, site names and other elements of getting a website posted:

Brackney Programmers

Bellwork through Oct 2

Many of you wanted to learn more about web page design. Understanding this starts with understanding HTML. We are going to start today with bellwork that explains the basics of HTML, then goes on to explain the more complex parts of web design and publishing.

For your bellwork today, please read and do the exercise at the bottom of lesson 1 from this site:

http://www.alternetwebdesign.com/htmltutorial/

When you have finished that, you may look at this page to get more ideas about web publishing:

http://www.lissaexplains.com/basics.shtml

Bellwork Sept 15-22

A good start....

... Get Organized

  1. Clean up your home folder: Each student has a home folder. To get to it from any computer in the school, go to My Computer and it will be listed under Network Drives.
    1. Open your home folder
    2. Create a new folder
      1. Right click anywhere inside your home folder
      2. Select New->Folder
    3. Name the folder 2005-2006
    4. Move all of your old files from last year into the folder you just created.

You should get used to organizing your documents in folders with names that help you remember what's in them.
  2. Find the Shared folder: Your grade level has a shared folder. Your teachers may put things in it for you to use for projects. Practice getting to this so that you learn how.
    1. Open up My Computer.
    2. In the address bar, type \\Eagles-2 and press Enter. The direction of the backslash is important. Use the key above the Enter key, not the one with the question mark.
    3. Double click on the Students folder.
    4. Double click on your YOG folder.
    5. Double click on the Shared Folder.

If you are working on a project with a friend, you can put items in here that you need to share. Please make a folder for any project you put in here, and label files with something that tells everyone who owns it and what's in it.
  3. Add a printer: Printers are not automatically added to any machine. You should know how to add them and how to determine what a printer is named.
    1. Printers are named with this syntax:
<where the printer is>_<what type of printer it is>
So, the Xerox Phaser 8400 in the computer lab is called:
      Lab_Phaser8400
    2. Each printer has a label on it, telling you what the name of the printer is. If you do not know the name of a printer that you want to use, go to it and look at the sticker.
    3. Add the Lab_Phaser using the directions on the link above called Add a printer under the yellow Resources banner.
  4. Practice your typing: During the year, you may have extra time. You can always use that time to work with Type to Learn to improve your typing skills. Then doing this, keep in mind that this is to improve yourself; looking at the keys or using bad form like two fingers will not help make you better at this. Take your time! Make yourself work at getting to be a better typist. Go to Start->All Programs->Sunburst->Type to Learn.
